stopwatch-29381_1280Don Kunst, W3LNE, and K2BSA ARA Vice President, has provided considerable insight into preparing for your Jamboree on the Air event. It’s called JOTA Countdown and has a full listing of the things you should be doing over the next several months for a successful event.

Check it out at JOTA Countdown.

ARRL First Contact Award

First_Contact_Certificate_BLENDFor those of you who teach license classes to Scouts, consider the ARRL First Contact Award to recognize that very first contact in their log.

You can find the information at http://www.arrl.org/first-contact

Just complete the form and ARRL will mail the certificate, shown nearby. Sounds like a great way to recognize this significant achievement.

Hat tip to John Baddour, KC8KI, who is using this with his Radio Merit Badge courses and Scout Camp activations.

Congrats to Dave Sumner, K1ZZ

Congratulations to Dave Sumner, K1ZZ, on his retirement this year after 44 years on the ARRL Staff including his current and long time role as Chief Executive Officer. He was also recently honored with the ARRL President’s Award.

Dave has been a longtime supporter of Radio Scouting, including taking a lead role in establishing the ARRL Amateur Radio Service to Scouting Award.

It’s also delightful to note that he served as the manager and trustee for the 1973 National Jamboree station, KJ3BSA. His call sign at the time was K1ZND.

All the best to Dave in his retirement.

Kay Craigie, N3KN, Steps Down as ARRL President

This week Kay Craigie, N3KN, steps down as ARRL President. The League summarized her nearly three decades as an official on their website. She cites her work with Scouting as one of the highlights with this quote:

President Craigie said she was happy to sign the first formal agreement between the ARRL and the Boy Scouts of America. “One of my best friends in Amateur Radio got his start as a Scout,” she noted, adding that she hopes the agreement will lead to welcoming “even more talented young people into our ranks.”

You can find the BSA and ARRL memorandum of understanding along with a video of Kay and BSA Chief Scout Executive Bob Mazzuca signing the agreement at our page BSA & ARRL.

Congratulations to Kay Craigie and thanks for her years of service to amateur radio.
